  HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS IN THE URBAN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS When one enters the informal settlements of Nairobi in other words known as slums or ghettos, you will note a great difference as compared to other upmarket estates. Poor road networks, no lighting, broken sewerage, lack of toilets and the list goes on and on; the governance system is not in place or does not seem to work. The authority seem to have neglected their duties and are only visible during political campaigns when the elections are looming. The police work in total disregard of the law where they arrest, assault and even go to an extent of killing the suspects where in most cases the deaths are not investigated in a bid to bring justice to the affected families. It is in this terrains that the grassroots human rights defenders and community based organizations work to help bridge the gap and address the social injustices at the community level. GHETTO FOUNDATION AT 8

  Ghetto Foundation was officially registered as a community based organization in July 2013. It has gone through ups and downs, but these are some of its successes in the 8 years of service to humanity. We take toll of some of the achievements ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT GF has trained over 1200 youths in business skills in partnership with University of British Columbia business school and Strathmore University. The training is held every year since 2013 with participants coming from all over Mathare and its environs. The trained youths have been able to start their own ventures while others have been capacitated with skills to serve well in their already existing social enterprises LIFE SKILLS AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP In its 8 years stint, GF have endeavored to empower many youths with life's skills through capacity building trainings and mentorship program which has impacted positive transformation in the community. THE VOICE OF THE YOUTH

  Youths are the custodians of our future. They are the voice of a country or a commu nity. They are the cheerleaders and hope to a better government or system. They bring about massive ideas that can help bring change in the community or a country. Ghetto Foundation is an organization that deals with reforming the youths, not all but those that are involved in crimes. They do this through capacity building initiatives in that they can be empowered through mentorship, advices, and encouragement. By doing so they create a platform for those that are involved in those crimes to reform and seek new ways that can enable them improve their living standards. Most youths involve themselves in crimes because they find themselves idle. And as we know idleness is the devils workshop.                                                   THE SEASON IS ON Young people or people of age 35 years and below are believed to be the largest population in Kenya which is not far from the truth. About 9 million of kenya’s population are youths and most of the participated in 2017 election and for those of them didn’t participate they are now ripe for the harvest as they will participate as they meet the requirements.
